How to Prepare Your Property for a Portable Room Installation

Room To Move portable room crane truck delivery

Adding a portable room to your property is one of the quickest and simplest ways to create more space. Whether you’re renting short-term or buying for the long haul, a little preparation makes delivery day smooth and stress-free. Here’s what you’ll need to know before your Room to Move portable room arrives.

Check Access to Your Site

For a standard delivery, we’ll need clear access of 2.8m wide and 3.5m high from the road through to where your room will sit. A straight, level driveway is usually ideal, but we understand that not every property is set up this way.

If your access is tight, sloped, or has obstacles like trees, fences or carports, don’t worry, we’ve delivered to plenty of tricky sites before. Just let us know your situation, and we can help assess whether delivery is possible as-is or whether alternative options are needed.

Crane Deliveries

In some cases, it’s more practical to lift your room into place using a crane truck or larger crane. Lifting rooms over fences or carports can often be completed with crane trucks, which is a very cost-effective option for a lot of our customers. For lifts that require greater distances, this can be achieved with larger cranes. Our team has relationships with a number of local crane operators in both Victoria and New South Wales to provide quotes and assistance where needed, so be sure to reach out if you have any queries or concerns about delivery of your portable room.

Make Space for Your Room

Each of our room types has a minimum footprint requirement to allow for both the building and some clearance space:

Retreat Room (4.8m x 2.4m) → approx. 6m x 3.5m clear space

Studio Room (4.2m x 2.4m) → approx. 6m x 3.5m clear space

Nook Room (3.0m x 2.4m) → approx. 4m x 3.5m clear space

Take a moment to measure out the area in your backyard, side yard, or front yard. This ensures the room fits comfortably and you still have space to move around it.

Prepare the Ground

Your portable room will need to sit on reasonably level and stable ground. A small degree of site fall is usually fine, but uneven or unstable ground can make installation more complex. If your chosen site isn’t level, we recommend speaking with us about simple ground prep options.

Additionally, in some areas with high winds, we may be required to put in some ground footings to ensure the room is fixed safely.

Our team can help talk through whether you’ll need any minor works before delivery, ensuring your room sits safely and securely from day one.

Plan for Power

All our portable rooms are designed to plug straight into your property using a standard extension lead. This means you’ll want to have a safe and accessible power source close to where your room will sit.

If you’re not sure where the nearest outlet is—or whether it’s suitable for your planned use—let us know and we can help guide you.

Think About Your Neighbours

Most standard deliveries take about an hour, but if access is tricky or a crane is required, it may take a little longer. Giving your neighbours a heads-up about delivery day can help avoid any surprises and keep things running smoothly.

Book Early

Because demand is high, we recommend booking your portable room in advance. We’re building new rooms every week, but there’s often a waiting list. Once your paperwork is complete, we can usually deliver your room within just a few days!

Not Sure About Your Site? Just Ask

Every property is different, and that’s where our know-how comes in. We’ve delivered rooms to suburban backyards, country blocks and tight city sites. If you’re unsure about access, ground level, or whether your space is big enough, reach out to our team. We’re always happy to help work through the details and, if needed, recommend solutions like crane deliveries to get your room into place.
